ECG electrodes typically consist of 4 key layers, with each layer working synergistically to ensure stable signal collection and biocompatibility:
Conductive Adhesive Layer: The core functional layer, containing biocompatible conductive media (e.g., silver/silver chloride powder, hydrogel). It reduces contact impedance between the skin and the electrode to minimize signal interference, while adhering gently to the skin to avoid irritation.
Electrode Core (Conductive Substrate): Usually made of silver foil, copper foil, or silver-plated PET film. It efficiently aggregates the electrical signals transmitted by the conductive adhesive layer and transfers them to the lead wires.
Base Layer (Carrier): Common materials include non-woven fabric and polyester film (PET), which offer good skin conformability to adapt to curved surfaces such as the chest and limbs. It also secures the electrode core and conductive adhesive layer in place.
Release Paper (Protective Layer): Covers the conductive adhesive layer before use to prevent dust and adhesion. It is peeled off during application to expose the adhesive layer, ensuring the conductivity of the gel remains active.
Key Performance Indicators

Contact Impedance: Must be ≤ 5kΩ (in compliance with medical standards). Excessively high impedance can cause ECG signal attenuation and increased noise, affecting monitoring accuracy. Biocompatibility: Skin-contact components (conductive adhesive, base layer) must pass cytotoxicity and sensitization tests to avoid allergic reactions such as skin redness and itching-critical for long-term monitoring scenarios (e.g., 24-hour ICU patient care). Adhesive Performance: Should maintain stable adhesion for 4–8 hours under normal activity or sweating, without peeling or shifting. It should also leave no residual adhesive and cause no skin damage when removed. Signal Stability: Equipped with anti-interference capabilities to reduce the impact of myoelectric signals (muscle activity) and power frequency interference (e.g., 50Hz grid signals) on ECG signals, ensuring clear waveform display (e.g., for continuous signal capture during Holter monitoring). |
